This Casa Ferreirinha Callabriga 2015 has a deep ruby colour. This wine has an intense and complex aroma with floral notes, tropical fruit, black and red fruit, spices and a minerality that contains hints of wet shale. Wood of great quality is well-integrated and contributes to the aromatic complexity. On the palate, it has good volume, with excellent, rounded tannins and a fantastic acidity. Further aromas of red and tropical fruit come to the fore, along with floral notes and hints of cocoa, courtesy of an excellent maturation.

Casa Ferreirinha was the first Douro producer dedicated entirely to making table wines, rather than Port. Its origins date back to 1952 when Fernando Nicolau de Almeida produced the first ever vintage of Barca-Velha and kickstarted the quality revolution in Douro table wines. Named after the legendary Dona Antónia Ferreira, one of the formidable widows of the world of wine, Casa Ferreirinha pays homage to the memory of this visionary woman. Today, the winemaking team is headed up by Luís Sottomayor, who restrains the Douro’s natural exuberance to produce wines that have a vibrant freshness allied to a lovely texture and depth.

The 2009 Chateau Belair Monange wine is an extraordinary terroir, now exploited by Edouard Moueix, the son of Christian, seems to be coming to life in a dramatic fashion. Never a hedonistic wine, but very intellectual, the 2009 Chateau Belair Monange wine suggests a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with black currants and black cherries. Still somewhat closed, medium to full-bodied, and impressive rather than seductive, this is a structured wine that needs to be forgotten for at least a decade, and then drunk over the following 30+ years. If readers are looking for the quintessential example of a terroir-dominated wine, this is Lesson 101 in terroir.

A rich, exotic wine, the 2015 Chateau Cantenac Brown is simply stunning. This 2015 Chateau Cantenac Brown wine has a fresh, perfumed bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and cedar aromas that feel very focused and cohesive. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and gentle grip, and quite saline in the mouth, leading into a spicy, vivacious. There is breeding interwoven into this Margaux, palpable sophistication, and it finishes with panache, fanning out with lightly spiced red and black fruit. The 2015 Chateau Cantenac Brown wine is quite concentrated and extracted in style, and yet all the elements are wonderfully fused together. This impressed in barrel just as it does here. Highly recommended. Best from 2022 through 2035.

The 2015 D’Issan is a total knock-out wine. Spectacularly ripe and intense, the 2015 exudes richness in all of its dimensions. This red wine has a super-ripe dark plum, lavender, spice, savory herbs, iron, smoke and new leather add myriad shades of nuance to this super-ripe, decidedly hedonistic Margaux. A powerful, dense wine, the 2015 is going to need a number of years before it is close to being ready to drink. I was quite impressed with d’Issan both times I tasted it. The 2015 has really come along nicely. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, aged in 50% new oak. It is a fine Chateau D’Issan that shows great classicism. This 2015 Chateau D’Issan has a great ageing potential.
